A short history of the apple
Apples have been eaten since prehistoric times. First eaten in West China and Turkey, they are now found in Europe, including Italy and Switzerland.
Romains will allow the fruit implantation in an important part of Europe with nearly 30 varieties. These have evolved over the centuries, and are selected for their resistance, taste and yield.
Even today, apples are produced and consumed all over France and the world. French people's favorite fruit, apple goes perfectly with many recipes and is available in many forms (juice, cider, vinegar, compote...).
Key figures for apple production in France
Apples are the most widely consumed fruit in France, ahead of bananas and oranges. Some 1.7 million tons of apples are harvested, with an average consumption of 20 kg per household per year.
There are over 400 varieties of apples in France, and they are the best-sellers of both the early market and supermarkets.
There are almost 41,000 hectares of apple orchards throughout France.
In 2022, apple production is forecast at 1.5 million tonnes, up 13% on 2021 (source: Chambres d'agriculture).
The world's leading apple producer is China, and France is in 10ᵉ position (Source: FranceAgriMer.).
Juliet® apples, 100% organic and 100% French
Juliet® is a 100% organically grown apple variety produced exclusively in France. Cultivated on nearly 570 hectares, it is produced without GMOs or synthetic chemicals.
Growers of the beautiful Juliet® apple have gathered in the association "Les Amis de Juliet®". There are now 190 of them, all working towards the same goals: raising awareness of Juliet®, developing their orchards and coordinating technical follow-up.
In addition to being located in France, all Juliet® apple growers are certified organic. To obtain this certification, an audit is carried out which includes monitoring compliance with the following rules:
- GMO forbidden
- Apples may not be grown using pesticides, synthetic herbicides or chemical fertilizers.
- Apple production must respect the natural balance of the environment and animal welfare.
