Apples, the most popular fruit in France
Apples are French people's favorite fruit. This may have something to do with the fact that it can be eaten anywhere, isn't too high in calories and has a nice sweet taste. The French consume 16.6 kg annually per household! It's also the leading fruit consumed, ahead of the famous bananas and oranges.
The three main producing countries are Poland, Italy and France.
50% of apples produced in France are for the French market, 31% for export and the remainder for processing.
Thanks to the release of ethylene, apples can speed up the ripening of other fruits in their vicinity. It is therefore advisable to store them separately.
When is an apple eaten ?
There are many varieties of apple in France, but only around fifty are marketed. The earliest are picked around July, the latest around November. Apples have a specific feature that sets them apart from many other fruits: they have two ripening dates, one for picking and one for eating. It can be eaten all year round.
How to eat apples
You can eat apples in a variety of ways, although eating them in their original form is the most popular. It can be eaten as a cooked dessert (94.1%), as a side dish (79.2%), otherwise (73%), or as an appetizer or salad (64.2%).
Organic apple production in France
Organic apple production in France has risen constantly in recent years. The regions producing the most apples are PACA, Normandy and Pays de Loire.
In terms of organic fruit consumption, apples come second behind bananas (source Interfel).
Juliet® apples, produced in France
Juliet® apples are produced exclusively in France using organic methods. All growers are French and members of the association "Les Amis de Juliet®" created in 2005. It now brings together almost 200 producers across France. The aim of this association is to raise awareness of Juliet®, and to coordinate and develop the monitoring of orchards.
Until now, it was the only variety in the world to be produced exclusively organically.
Juliet® apple also has several product ranges, including pure apple juice, cider, cider vinegar, sparkling juice and compote. And, of course, they're all organic.
